How to do a SERP analysis (before you write a single line)
A SERP analysis is the study of a search results page to work out what Google believes the query means — which intent it serves, which formats it rewards, and which features (AI Overview, featured snippet, People Also Ask) absorb the clicks. Done before writing or optimizing, it turns guesswork into a brief.
Step 1: collect the SERP from the right market
Results differ by country, language and personalization. Search from the market you sell to — set country and language explicitly and use a private window — or the analysis starts from a page your customers never see.
Step 2: read the intent from what ranks
Ignore what you hope the query means and look at what Google chose: product pages signal transactional intent, guides and comparisons signal informational or commercial research, and a mixed page signals a split intent you can segment. If the top ten are all how-to guides, a product page is the wrong weapon no matter how well it is optimized.
Step 3: inventory the SERP features
Note whether the page shows an AI Overview, a featured snippet, People Also Ask, videos or a local pack — and who is cited inside them. Features change the economics of a ranking: position 1 under an AI Overview is worth less than position 3 on a clean page. If you are unsure whether your query triggers one, here is how to check it properly.
Step 4: profile the ranking pages
For the top results, record the format (guide, list, tool, comparison), the approximate depth, the subtopics and entities they cover, and how they open — do they answer immediately or wind up slowly? This is where the bar sits. The systematic version of this step is a competitor SERP analysis; the diff against your own page is a content gap analysis.
Step 5: turn it into a brief
Write down: the intent to serve, the format that wins, the subtopics the winners share, the People Also Ask questions worth answering, and the feature to target (snippet or AI citation). A page built against that brief competes from day one; a page built on intuition competes by accident.
The mistakes that invalidate the exercise
Searching logged-in from the wrong country, reading only the top three results, ignoring the features, and treating the SERP as static — results pages rotate, so re-check after a few weeks.
SerpTune runs this whole loop as a product: it fetches the live SERP for your query and market, records the AI Overview and its citations, profiles the ranking competitors and returns a prioritized action list comparing them to your page. For a free first measure, start with the AI Overview checker.
