GEO vs SEO: what generative engine optimization changes (and what it keeps)
In 2026 roughly half of Google searches show an AI Overview, and assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answer millions of questions a day without ever showing a classic results page. The discipline that grew around this shift has a name: generative engine optimization (GEO) — optimizing content so that AI engines cite it when they compose an answer.
The core difference: rankings vs citations
Classic SEO competes for a position in an ordered list; the reward is a click. GEO competes for a citation inside a synthesized answer; the reward is being one of the handful of sources the engine leaned on. The two are related but not interchangeable: studies throughout 2025 and 2026 keep finding that a large share of the sources cited by AI engines do not rank in the organic top 10 for the same query. Ranking well helps, but it is no longer the whole game.
What GEO keeps from SEO

What GEO changes
- Answer-shaped writing. Every important section should open with a short, self-contained answer (roughly one to three sentences) that survives being lifted out of context. Engines quote passages, not pages.
- Verifiable substance. Figures, dates, named sources and first-hand observations give a model something concrete to attribute. Vague prose gets paraphrased without credit; specific prose gets cited.
- The metric. Instead of average position you track share of citation: how often your domain appears among the sources of the answers that matter to you.
