What a semantic content gap is (and how to close it)
Search engines no longer match keywords — they match meaning. When a page ranks, it usually covers a set of entities, subtopics and questions that together signal topical completeness. A semantic content gap is the difference between what the ranking pages cover and what your page covers.
Why it matters
Two pages can target the same query and read fluently, yet one ranks and the other doesn't. Often the winner simply answers more of the intent: it names the right entities, addresses adjacent questions, and leaves fewer open loops for the reader (and the model behind an AI Overview).
How to find the gap
- Collect the SERP. Take the top pages for your query in the right country and language.
- Extract the concepts. List the entities, subheadings and questions each competitor covers.
- Diff against your page. What do most competitors include that you omit or under-develop?
How to close it
Prioritize by impact and effort. Add the missing high-importance topics as genuine sections (not keyword stuffing), tighten thin areas, and make each answer self-contained. Re-check after a few weeks — semantic completeness compounds.
