How to check if a keyword triggers an AI Overview (and whether you are cited)
Before optimizing anything for AI Overviews you need two facts: does Google actually show an AI Overview for your keyword, and if it does, who gets cited? Both vary by country, language and even by day — which is why the method of checking matters more than most guides admit.
The manual check, done properly
- Search from the right market. An AI Overview shown in the US often does not exist for the same query in Italy or Germany. Set the country and language explicitly instead of trusting your local defaults.
- Use a private window. Personalization changes both whether the box appears and which sources it cites.
- Repeat on different days. AI Overviews are volatile: the same query can gain the box, lose it, and regain it with a different citation set within a week.
- Record what you see. Query, date, market, box present or not, cited domains. Memory is not a dataset.
Why one glance is not an answer
Industry tracking through 2026 puts AI Overviews on roughly half of informational queries — but presence fluctuates per query, and citation sets churn even when the box is stable. A single check in your logged-in browser can mislead in both directions: you may panic over a box your customers never see, or miss one that is quietly absorbing your clicks.
Checking programmatically
SERP APIs can record, for a query in a given market, whether the AI Overview appeared and which sources it cited. That turns “I think we are in it” into a time series you can act on — and it is the only practical route once you track more than a handful of keywords across countries.
Three outcomes, three playbooks
- No AI Overview. Classic SERP features still rule this query — a featured snippet is the prize, and the same habits win both.
- Present, and you are cited. Protect the position: keep the answer extractable, the data fresh, the structure stable.
- Present, and you are not cited. Find what the cited pages cover that yours does not — the usual suspects are the 7 causes we walk through here.
Where SerpTune fits
Our free AI Overview checker scores any URL on the 8 on-page signals that correlate with citations — that tells you whether your page is citable. A full SerpTune analysis goes further: it observes the live SERP for your query and market, records whether an AI Overview appeared and which domains it cited, and compares your page against the competitors that won — so the next move is a fix list, not a guess.
